Security System Analytics using Power BI

Overview

The surveillance system domain focuses on monitoring and managing security infrastructure such as CCTV cameras and access control systems. These systems continuously generate operational data including access logs, system health, downtime, alerts, and issue tickets. Efficient monitoring is essential to ensure safety, reduce failures, and maintain smooth functioning across large-scale installations.

The Challenges

A key challenge in this domain is the absence of unified monitoring when systems are deployed at a large scale. Data is distributed across multiple devices and platforms, making it difficult to track performance in one place. Identifying frequent issues, analyzing downtime, and monitoring false alerts or access mismatches requires significant manual effort. Additionally, evaluating technician performance and response time becomes complex without proper visualization.

Objective

The objective of this report is to provide a centralized monitoring solution where even large-scale surveillance systems can be observed and analyzed at once. It aims to deliver complete visibility into system performance, track issues efficiently, and enable quick decision-making through interactive Reports.

Solution

This Power BI report provides a integrated view of both CCTV and access control systems. It consolidates data into meaningful KPIs and visualizations such as system health, downtime trends, ticket analysis, and issue breakdowns. The Report enables users to quickly identify problem areas, monitor trends over time, and assess technician performance. Interactive filters allow users to drill down into specific system types and time periods for deeper analysis.

Report Coverage

Page 1 – CCTV System Monitoring

This page focuses on monitoring the performance and health of CCTV systems. It includes key metrics such as total cameras, cameras under maintenance, average downtime, and frame drop rate. The page provides analysis of different camera types (dome, PTZ, bullet, turret) along with false alert distribution. It also highlights downtime trends over time, identifies major issues like camera failures or poor video quality, and evaluates technician performance using MTTR.

Page 2 – Access Control System Monitoring

This page provides insights into access control systems with KPIs such as total systems, systems under maintenance, and mismatch authentication rate. It includes analysis of access types like biometric, RFID, face recognition, and keypad. The page also shows access results (granted vs denied), time-based access attempts, ticket trends, and common issues such as access denied errors or hardware faults. Technician-wise MTTR is included to track efficiency and response time.

Conclusion

This surveillance monitoring Report enables organizations to efficiently manage and monitor large-scale systems from a single platform. It enhances visibility, reduces manual effort, and helps in proactive issue resolution. By leveraging Power BI, organizations can improve system reliability, optimize maintenance operations, and ensure better security management.
