Comprehensive Analysis of Olympic (Football)

The Challenge

With an expanding dataset of football match statistics spanning seasons, players, and team performances, stakeholders—such as coaches, analysts, and fans—faced challenges like:

  • Tracking team and player performance over multiple seasons
  • Comparing metrics across teams (goals, cards, wins, etc.)
  • Identifying season-wise performance drops
  • Navigating through vast tables without intuitive visual cues

Traditional tools lacked visual storytelling and trend analysis across seasons, making it difficult to assess historical accuracy or progression.

The Solution

To address these gaps, a multi-tab Power BI dashboard was developed, structured into four main views:

  • Spotting Top Teams: Identified the teams that won most often to see who played the strongest and most consistently over time.
  • Disciplinary Monitoring: Checked which teams received the most yellow and red cards to see who played aggressively or broke the rules more often.
  • Home and Away Performance: Compared how teams performed when playing on their home ground versus away to identify where they played better.
  • Looking at Each Season’s Story: Shows how each season compared in terms of goal activity, helping you spot more exciting or high-scoring years. You can also select any team to understand their playing style across seasons.
  • Performance Drops Highlighted: Spotted when teams’ performance (like accuracy in shooting goals) dropped compared to the last season, making it easy to find out which teams need improvement.
  • Understanding Team Performance: Compare the teams’ performances head-to-head. Teams with a higher number of wins are likely to emerge as the front-runners in the competition, showcasing their dominance. On the other hand, teams burdened with more losses may struggle, finding themselves towards the lower end of the standings.
  • Individual Player Summary: Reveal a player’s role and value—whether they’re a goal-scorer, creator, or aggressive defender—based on their team, age, discipline, and overall contributions like shots, passes, and assists.

The Extra Mile

Inspired by advanced dashboarding principles from the Olympic case, this project added:

  • Red font conditional formatting in the Seasonal Accuracy table to emphasize performance drops season-on-season.
  • The tooltip in the Points table shows the last 5 matches of the team, including the date, result, and opponent.
  • The Player Summary page displays key information about the player, including their team, age group, goals scored, assists, and overall performance.
  • Clean, icon-driven navigation for better user experience.

The Impact

  • Analysts can quickly identify drop-offs in team performance across seasons
  • Coaches use accuracy trends to inform tactical adjustments
  • Decision-makers spot key performers (e.g., Man City’s consistent win record and shot accuracy)
  • Fans enjoy an interactive, stats-rich view of their favorite teams and players

This Power BI dashboard serves as a centralized, data-driven command center that makes complex multi-season football.
